Anyone completed a reputable home study Sports massage course?
My husband Captains an amateur cricket team in the summer, and plays rugby through the winter. I’ve noticed they get a lot of pulls, strains and sprains etc. I’d like to become qualified in sports massage so I can help him and advise his friends where appropriate. I have a Bachelors Science already but work full time now so can’t go back and study for this too. I can find several distance learning courses but can’t tell which ones are accredited by the ‘right’ people. Has anyone actually done one that resulted in them being qualified to the right level? I’m only talking minor injuries and treatment, the rest is the physio’s job! I just don’t want to end up doing more harm than good by learning from a dodgy source.
In reply to first answer, I am in the UK, rather than the states – I don’t know if the legislation is very different. Thanks for your answer!
It all depends on what state you live in. Every state has their own requirement for attaining certification or licensure in massage therapy, although the average is 500 hours. In order to practice sports massage safely and effectively you will not only want to study massage therapy but also make sure that your school is accredited and that they do offer sports massage in their curriculum. Sports massage involves so much from stimulating circulation, to proper strectching, to relieving muscle tension.
I have a Bachelors degree and also work fulltime, but I’ve managed to study and get licensed in nail care, skin care and massage therapy. If you really want to do it, it’s really not that bad. But if that isn’t an option, I would suggest placing an ad for a volunteer sports massage therapist. You may luck out and find a new massage therapy graduate who needs experience in this field. Just make sure they are certified/licensed and that they have professional liability insurance.

My boyfriend tends to get headaches fairly frequently. He’s a violinist so I’m almost a hundred percent positive they are tension headaches. All those practice hours and classes all day as well as being a glasses wearer seem to be the culprit. Last night he said he had a headache from one of his eyes and when he woke this morning it was still there. I’ve read this could be the sign of a migraine? Anyhow, he’s a fairly stubborn guy and I want to help him out. Anyone have some good gentle but effective massage tips I can use later today? He’s pretty sensitive about his neck and back because its stiff/sore from playing.
Thanks!
If I’m not mistaken, violinists spend a lot of time with their neck cricked (I had another word, but it got bleeped, hahahah!) in one direction, and he may need to do counteractive exercises to keep his cervical spine in equilibrium. Tension headaches are usually bilateral, but maybe his lopsided posture is spinning it to one side. As for massage on tender muscles, a light touch and a good massage oil are key, as well as making sure your massagee is completely relaxed so that he isn’t using any of the muscles being worked on, and his spine needs to be completely straight and neutral so that when the muscles supporting that spine finally do relax, the spine restores itself to a healthy position, not a crooked one.

i met this guy while i was in the military, we’ve talked a few times, but nothing serious. One day we were watching tv in the day room together and he asked me what I like to do and I told him I like to dance and that Im a fan of Janet Jacskon and know alot of her dance videos. So, he was like, “why dont you show me?” so I did and brung my stereo and one of my janet jackson cds and danced for him. I did that dance called, “nasty boys” in his dorm room. He told me that I was really good. Then all of a sudden, he starts saying,”Can I give you a massage?” I let him, then he started kissing on my neck and stuff. So, I”m thinking , did he use that as an excuse to get close to me or did I just turn him on? just curious
