Swedish Massage – Back, Shoulders and Neck Only???

I am getting ready for my first Swedish Massage. I think that I would only be comfortable asking the therapist to work on my back, neck and shoulders. Is that a strange request to ask them to only concentrate on those areas?

As a massage therapist, this is probably one of the most common requests I get. The neck and shoulders work very hard and hold a lot of tension from stress. An experienced therapist should know plenty of techniques to help you.

Whether it is your first massage or your 20th, you have the right to dictate where and how you are touched. If the pressure is too deep, say so, and the therapist should lighten up.

P.S. I don’t know if it was the strangest, but I once had a woman who asked me to work on just her feet for an hour. That was probably the worst request I’ve had.

Ok First, it does not sound weird. Is see this every single day in my office. This is a classic presentation of a neck that is out of proper alignment.

You really need to see a chiropractor. They will be able to help realign your neck and help relieve this tension. If it is anything more serious, they will refer you out to a proper specialist.

When I was in high school my dad walked in on my and my boyfriend at the time having sex. He never knocked, just opened my bedroom door. My BF and I were home alone and my dad didn’t live with my mom and me anymore, but he still had a housekey.

All I could do was stare at him for a second and yell “Don’t you ever knock!?” He never said a word and just walked out. I was 16, so I don’t even know if he knew I was having sex! My mom did though.

To make matters worse, my boyfriend, still on top of me, looks down at me and goes “do you wanna finish?” Like, NO! LMAO. Truly it was not funny at the time but very much so in retrospect.

It was something I never mentioned to my dad. Figured i’d take a wait and see approach and see if he ever said anything to me. He never did. We just sort of pretended it never happened.

A truly mortifying experience, but I just wouldn’t say anything at all and maybe it will just be one of those things that is never spoken of.

Sounds like you’re on the right track using a heated pad for your neck. You could also try some gentle neck stretches. A simple routine I often use can be found on the BBC website (here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/headroom/mood_improvers/relaxation_tracks.shtml?stretch). These can help loosen up your muscles when they’re stiff. I also find it helps to do them regularly to prevent my neck from becoming stiff in the first place – this is particularly useful if I’m doing work on the computer or am hunched up over a desk.

For the migraine, you could try a triptan – a medication which aims to stop the migraine by re-balancing the chemicals (Serotonin) in your head. Many of these triptans are only available on prescription, but you can buy one over the counter in the UK under the brand name Imigran.

Do you get migraines often? If so, it might be worth talking to your GP about medications which you can take every day to prevent them. Your GP can also refer you to a neurologist or specialist migraine clinic if this might help.

I also get migraines and have found the Migraine Action website really useful (www.migraine.org.uk). They have all kinds of information, along with a telephone and e-mail helpline for answering your questions.

This works better when lying down on your back- bring both hands to the back of your neck with finger tips on either side of your spine. Pull/lift slowly. Work your way up from the base of your shoulders to the base of your skull.
You can also place a small towel/wash cloth rolled up and placed at the base of your skull while lying on the floor- it will help relax your neck muscles. To get shoulder muscles you can place two tennis balls in a tube sock. Again lie back and move the balls so they are under any tense spots making sure to avoid the spine. (Never place direct pressure on the spine.)

Other things you can do is use a hot pack or hot shower (unless you did something to injure your neck in which case use cold for the first 48 hours) to help loosen up muscles. Alternate this with neck rotations and stretching.
