I mean its supposed to feel good and everything, but what is the benefit? What is actually going on with the muscles?
Unfortunately there’s no evidence that anything really goes on with the muscles that I know of. So far the only physical change that has been proven is a decrease in stress hormone, which can result in temporary relaxation and pain relief. As far as positive changes and benefits to the muscles, I haven’t seen proof of it yet. But science doesn’t stop massage promoters from saying the exact opposite. They will always BELIEVE and teach differently, regardless of the proof.
Although therapists frequently report changes in the reflex activity of muscles, there is a lack of evidence to support the use of massage to alter the reflex activity of muscles. (Effects of massage on alpha motoneuron excitability, 1991)
Tiidus (1997; 2002) concluded that the limited evidence currently available does not support the use of massage to repair muscle damage. In fact, researchers of the relationship between massage and muscle function have been unable to detect a difference.
