Sports Massage Therapists in the UK?
I am nearing the end of my sports massage course and am wondering where to go from here? Our teacher has told us that we could just use the techniques in our normal massage routine? but I would like to advertise this as a separate treatment, but am unsure as to price/times of a specific ailment treatment or whether its best to advertise as ie back sports massage? leg massage? Any ideas from therapists who are already in this line of work will be appreciated.
I am in the same position as you, qualified in Holistic Massage and making good progress through a Sports Massage course and there are many options open to you.
As your tutor said you can incorporate Sports Massage techniques into Holistic routines, which I regularly do, you could even see if any of the sports clubs which you have been in contact with for your case studies wish to retain your services, naturally in return for a fee to be negotiated.
If you wish to consider that avenue, don’t forget that athletes often compete away from home and calculate your travel and overnight stay fees as necessary.
You could set up a “surgery” at a sports centre, although they would likely require you to pay rent for the room so your fees should reflect this. Remember that your reason for doing this is to make a profitable career out of it. and customers do expect a bill for your services.
Sports Massage routines are often short and concentrated on the area that the sportsperson has an issue with or is going to be in use for an event, however because you may be dealing with post injury rehab issues, the consultation usually takes longer than for a Holistic Massage, again your fee should reflect this.
As regards times of specific ailment treatments, “how long is a piece of string?” comes to mind. I gave a pre event treatment to an athlete to loosen calf muscles and treat an ankle issue and it took 45 minutes just to loosen the calf muscles, so you have to get used to going away from pre set and timed routines and to dealing with what you are presented with. A standard Full Body Massage may reveal knotted muscles in the back and so you spend more time on the back than expected and so in 1 hour you don’t cover the full body, but you sort out the back problem.
I don’t know what level your qualification is, but there is always the avenue of further courses, Sports Therapy, Physiotherapy etc (Just think of how much David Beckham ’s Sports Therapist is going to earn!).
As regards fees, remember that although the client is paying by the hour, they are also paying for your knowledge and experience so a reasonable professional fee would be expected.
I hope I have given you some ideas and wish you well in your chosen field.
