Repost(again): 10 week old and sleeping habits?
I’ve posted this answer twice before but only got 3 answers, (thank you to those who answered) I am hoping for a few more ideas, so maybe the third time is the charm.
My daughter will be 10 weeks old on Thursday. Her sleeping habits are erratic at best. I give her a bath and then a massage at 8 and put her down by 9 each night. She might sleep for 20 minutes, she might sleep for 2 hours, I never know. This goes on all night long! I keep the lights very dim in her room, swaddle her, only pick her up from her crib when she is crying, I have a heartbeat machine in her room and I only change her when she has a dirty diaper or is very wet. During the day she takes a lot of cat naps (4 or 5 about 30 minutes) and one longer nap (1.5 hours). She does not cry at night typically, but looks very tired (red eyes, yawning…) Is this normal? How do I get her to sleep better at night? It is 2:30 am here and she is wide awake right now!
10 weeks old is very young for her to be sleeping any better than that, really. However, there are some ideas that come to mind- first, does she nap in the same place as bedtime? If so, start laying her down for naps out in the living room, on the floor or in a play yard. Somewhere where it is nice and bright and there is a little activity going on. Save the crib for bedtime only, and keep it dark in there. Babies that sleep in a dark nursery in there crib all the time often confuse daytime naps with nighttime. Also, do you breastfeed? If so, you might review your own diet. If you are having caffeine, for example, it may be keeping her awake at night even though she is tired. If none of these work, you may try co-sleeping. I cosleep, and love it. My son slept about like what your daughter does, and I brought him to bed with me, and he slept for 6 hours straight. Good luck!
